Our History

Devon Mind is an independent charity and we are very proud to be affiliated with the Mind group. This includes around 120 local Mind associations across England and Wales, and many Mind shops.  Devon Mind has evolved from Plymouth & District Mind so that we can offer support to more people across Devon.

Pymouth & District Mind formed in 1984, and grew from strength to strength, evolving and re-structuring as the need arose, reflecting both the needs of mental health service users and the community around us.

We developed our Recovery College service in 1983 which has become a hugely important part of the mental health system in Plymouth. Our work with national Mind grew also and we were involved in the Side by Side Peer Support Project, and the innovative Blue Light Programme for emergency services staff and volunteers

In April 2019, we launched Devon Mind. Why? There is some great work already happening in Devon, but as the third largest county in the country, there are also areas with little or no access to mental health support. We want to work in partnership with colleagues in Devon to increase our reach to people at greater risk of isolation.

Change is a process and not an event – so we will be taking the development of Devon Mind step-by-step. We will spend the next 12 months until March 2020 finding out about the services people need in Devon, what partners we can work alongside, and how we can raise funding to expand our flagship Recovery College service across the county over the coming years.

Devon Mind is an independent charity with our own board of trustees and financial accounts. We are delighted to have achieved the Mind Quality Mark, which is recognised by the charity commission.
