Thank you NCS!

The NCS (National Citizen Service) is a government run programme for 15-17 year olds and offers 3/4 weeks of activities after GCSEs – all for £50/person!

In the first week, the group visit Falmouth University and partake in water sports all that week. In the second week, the group stays at Plymouth College, completing workshops such as first aid training and attending talks from the University of Plymouth, the Royal Air Force, and much more. In the third week, the group must decide on a social action project to undertake, in order to give back to the community.

Eryn Jones said that the group chose Devon Mind as their target charity because all members felt strongly about raising money for Devon Mind. The group decided to do a charity football match, which they organised in 5 days. The match was played on the 28th of July. By creating a Facebook page for the charity football match, and telling their friends and family about the event, the group managed to raise £505.02.

Olivia Craig, CEO of Devon Mind said that she was ‘”blown away by the enthusiasm and energy of this group of young people”. Olivia explained how she had met with the group when they approached a Devon Mind stand at Drake Circus, “myself and my team were raising awareness of the work we do, when a group of young people approached and asked if they could fundraise for Devon Mind. Mental health really resonated with them as a group. We were astounded by their efficiency in setting up and promoting a charity match – and raising over £500 to boot!’. Olivia continued by adding that the money would be used to offer more 1:to:1 support to people in crisis.
