The Next Steps Project

Providing early intervention provision for adults and young people in Plymouth with mental health issues.

About Next Steps

Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the Next Steps project runs from 2017—2021 and is committed to the following:

  1. Supporting the wellbeing and mental health of people in Plymouth by making our services, advice and guidance available in GP surgeries and community settings across the city, and by providing volunteer opportunities for people on their recovery journeys.

  2. Supporting the development of good mental wellbeing and emotional resilience in our young people in secondary schools in Plymouth. As part of the project, we have developed a bespoke course called “Life Is a Rollercoaster,” which has already been delivered in a number of schools.

  3. Promoting good mental health to the wider school communities through the delivery of assemblies and information sessions for parents and carers. If you would like us to deliver an assembly in your school on good mental health, please email admin@devonmind.com.

What we have achieved so far

We have supported 3,148 adults with mental health support, advice and signposting through our work in GP surgeries, community centres and children’s centres.
We have engaged with 191 young people in Plymouth through our in-school course “Life Is a Rollercoaster”, school assemblies, and school workshops.
We have worked with 49 volunteers to provide them with opportunities that would support their recovery from poor mental health.

Anxiety workshops

Are you aged 16—24 years old and:

  • struggling with low self-confidence,

  • want to learn how to cope with feelings of anxiety,

  • worried about your future, or

  • want to believe in yourself?

As part of our involvement in Next Steps, we’re excited to be running a course which gives you the opportunity to build your self-confidence, learn how to maintain healthy mental wellbeing, and set goals for your future.

Coming in autumn 2021

Due to the impact of COVID-19, we have not been able to deliver our “Life Is a Rollercoaster” course face-to-face in schools for most of 2020 and 2021 to date. We are working hard to convert this into a “Train the Trainer” course for any school staff in Plymouth who wish to deliver this activity in their school as part of their wellbeing and citizenship programmes.

About the “Train the Trainer” course

The “Train the Trainer” course is a free 4-hour course that will be delivered in two 2-hour sessions over Zoom.

The sessions will provide you with the resources and tools you need to deliver the “Life Is a Rollercoaster” course to students as bitesize workshops or a longer course. The course focuses on how we you can support young people to learn new skills to manage their negative feelings and emotions.
