Do you enjoy escaping into a book? Do you want to meet like-minded people who share your passion for reading? Join our monthly book club and social get-together at Mrs Browns Bakery in Plymouth.
We invite you to join our group to connect with others through reading, sharing book recommendations, and enjoying the opportunity to relax and listen to others share their love of books. Feel free to bring along your favourite books to enjoy with a coffee and cake.
Reading has been closely linked to reducing stress levels, promoting relaxation, improving sleep, and enhancing connectivity in the brain. A book can allow us to escape into new worlds, present us with new perspectives, and can be a healthy distraction from everyday stresses and screen time.
“Books are a uniquely portable magic”
Overview:
The aim of our book club is to create a space for individuals to share what they are reading, recommend their favourite stories, discuss dynamic characters and attractive settings, and explore the books that challenge ideas, make them laugh and cry, and take them on journeys to different eras, places, and spaces.
Every month we will have a choice of a fiction or non-fiction book that we will discuss as a group. Although we encourage and invite you to read the book of the month, it is not essential and you can still attend to share your love of books with the group. Each month’s book will be chosen together in the club, so we’d love to hear your recommendations! We will aim to select books that feature topics around mental health or an influential and inspiring story, but we are open to any suggestions you may have.
Book of the month — May 2025
Sociopath: A Memoir by Patric Gagne
Insightful and surprisingly life-affirming, Gagne's extraordinary memoir paints a fascinating and fully-rounded picture of what it means to belong to the five percent of the population categorised as sociopaths.
Sociopath: A Memoir is a true story of a life lived on the edge of the law and an account of one woman’s battle to gain a deeper understanding of people who, like her, are sociopaths. Jaw-dropping and moving in equal measure, you will be thinking about this story for a long time to come.
Where to find the book: Amazon, World of Books, Audible, eBay, and local charity shops.
