Launching the Plymouth Harbour Runs with the Chestnut Appeal

Today, we have an exciting announcement that’s been months in the works: we’re launching our very own active challenge events, the Plymouth Harbour Runs, in partnership with men’s health charity the Chestnut Appeal! Registration is now open for the first event, the Plymouth Harbour 10K sponsored by Bishop Fleming.

Offering unique running experiences centred around Plymouth’s famous Sutton Harbour, the Plymouth Harbour 10K and Plymouth Harbour Half provide opportunities for local running enthusiasts to come together to improve their wellbeing, and raise much-needed money and awareness for two charities based in Plymouth. With the funds raised through the events, we plan to develop crossover services alongside co-organiser the Chestnut Appeal to meet the mental health needs of men across Devon living with prostate cancer, testicular cancer, or penile cancer.

Speaking about the excitement of launching our first ever active challenge event, Marketing & Fundraising Manager Andre Pusey states:

This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and with the events expertise of our colleagues at the Chestnut Appeal, now is the perfect time to go for it! Lots of people and organisations looking to support the fight for mental health across Devon have asked us for an event like this, so we’re really excited to be able to bring them the Plymouth Harbour Runs.

Chestnut Appeal’s Events & Campaigns Manager David Squires adds:

We’re delighted to be teaming up with Devon Mind on this fantastic, unique event. Raising awareness of physical and mental health whilst taking on this 10km challenge is a perfect fit.

Harriet Reynolds, Tax Executive and Wellbeing Champion at headline sponsor Bishop Fleming, comments:

We are delighted to be sponsoring the Plymouth Harbour 10K in October to support Devon Mind and the Chestnut Appeal. As a Plymouth-based business ourselves, we thought it was the perfect event to get involved with to demonstrate our commitment to supporting our communities, especially as the route passes our office on Sutton Harbour.

The run provides a great fundraising opportunity for both charities and we are looking forward to bringing a team of runners to be a part of this. It is a pleasure to help raise money and awareness for such worthwhile and vital causes, and we look forward to supporting them with this event.

Both events are non-competitive, focused entirely on fundraising and community participation — neither event will be timed by us, and everyone who enters will receive a participation medal at the end. Also, everyone who enters and completes the Plymouth Harbour 10K sponsored by Bishop Fleming in October will be entered into a free prize draw, which will take place shortly after the event (prize to be confirmed).

About the events

The Plymouth Harbour 10K is a picturesque running experience set to take place on Sunday 16th October 2022. The event starts at Mount Batten, with the 10 km route along the South West Coast Path finishing at Rockets & Rascals on the Barbican. Perfect for beginners looking to set themselves a new challenge or improve their fitness, the 10K costs just £15 to enter, which includes a free ferry ride back to the start point.

The Plymouth Harbour Half is a ‘run-back-home’ challenge designed for more experienced runners looking for something a bit different. Scheduled for spring 2023, the event will start with a coach ride from the Barbican to Yelverton, where participants will be dropped off and challenged to run back to the starting point. The Half takes place primarily on cycle routes on the heart of Dartmoor. Date and entry fee to be announced.

How to get involved

To participate — Registration is now open for the Plymouth Harbour 10K on Sunday 16th October 2022, for just £15 per person. Registration for the Plymouth Harbour Half will open later in 2022.

To volunteer — We are also looking for volunteers to serve as stewards on the 10K run, directing participants to ensure they know which way the route is. You can register your interest below.
