Volunteer Manager
Type: Full-time • Salary: £36,500 • Term: Permanent • Location: Plymouth • Closes: When filled
We’re looking for an inspiring, experienced, and ambitious Volunteer Manager to join our team and help shape the future of volunteering across Devon Mind. This is an exciting new role for the organisation and a unique opportunity to build something transformational.
While volunteers have always played an important role within Devon Mind, we are now ready to take the next step: embedding volunteering into every part of our organisation so that it becomes central to how we deliver support, connect communities, and create impact across Devon.
This role is about far more than coordinating volunteers. It is about building meaningful opportunities that empower people to contribute their skills, experiences, passions, and time in ways that truly matter.
About the role:
We want Devon Mind to become the leading organisation in Devon for meaningful, inclusive, and life-enhancing volunteering opportunities within mental health and wellbeing. We want our volunteers to feel valued, heard, supported, connected, and inspired. We want volunteering with Devon Mind to be something people are proud to be part of - an experience that changes lives, builds confidence, develops skills, and creates lasting relationships and community impact.
As Volunteer Manager, you will play a pivotal role in making this vision a reality. You will lead the development of our volunteering strategy and help design an exceptional volunteer journey - from recruitment and onboarding through to development, recognition, and ongoing support. You will work across the organisation to identify exciting new volunteer opportunities that strengthen and enhance our services, broaden our reach, and improve outcomes for the people we support.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about people, community, and inclusion - but equally, someone who brings substantial professional experience and expertise in leading and developing volunteering within an organisation. This is not an entry-level coordination role; it is a strategic and transformational position that requires credible, proven experience of successfully managing, growing, and embedding volunteer programmes at scale. You will be highly skilled at building relationships, creating inclusive opportunities, supporting people from diverse backgrounds, and developing a positive culture where volunteers feel genuinely valued, heard, supported, and empowered.
What makes this role so important for Devon Mind
This role is central to strengthening community involvement and extending the reach and impact of our mental health services across Devon. Volunteers play a pivotal role not only within our direct mental health support services, but also in strengthening Devon Mind’s wider activities, including community engagement, events, fundraising activity, peer support and awareness raising within local communities.
The Volunteer Manager will help shape, coordinate and grow a compassionate, inclusive and sustainable volunteering programme that supports both volunteers and the people who access our services. The role will focus on developing meaningful volunteering opportunities, strengthening volunteer wellbeing and retention, and ensuring volunteers are supported to make a positive contribution across Devon Mind’s community-based work.
We want volunteering with Devon Mind to be a positive, empowering and rewarding experience. Volunteers will be supported to develop confidence, skills, experience and meaningful community connections, while contributing to improved mental health and wellbeing across Devon. The role will also help create clear development pathways for volunteers, including opportunities for training, peer leadership, employability development and progression into more structured or paid roles where appropriate.
