A letter of hope for World Suicide Prevention Day 2021

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day 2021, we’ve put together a letter of hope to remind anyone reading that they are not alone — that things will change and the end doesn’t have to be the answer — and that there are people who love you and will want to help you feel like you again.

We hope this provides some comfort to anyone reading. Please feel free to share this with your loved ones to let them know that you are listening. #BeTheLight — let someone know that you are listening. Be the reason someone feels seen, heard and supported — ask them.

This letter and the named writer are fictional. The content is based on real experiences of surviving suicide.

Dear Friend,

I am writing this letter to tell you that I understand the darkness you may be feeling right now. I myself have been there – feeling alone, like a failure, and that no one cares. The thoughts that consumed my mind daily gave me no hope for the future.

I tried to stop the pain I once felt, tricked into believing that the end was the answer. A stranger's kind words gave me hope and I felt able to ask for support. Such a small act changed my path, and I was able to begin to understand that the overpowering negative thoughts I was bombarded with were part of an illness, and were not true.

I'm glad I didn't give up on life, because nothing lasts forever, even if it seems like it will.

I know I am yet to meet you, and I don't know exactly what is causing your pain, but I understand what it is like to feel alone and in pain. I hope that I can offer you some reassurance and comfort that you are not alone in how you feel. Pain is temporary and you can overcome anything. I was able to get through the darkness by asking for help, and I know you will too. There are people that love you and will want to help, and all it might take is that important first step.

Please believe that you can get through this, one day at a time. You will once again smile, the sun will shine, and you will realise that your future will be brighter than today.

Remember that you are loved, and most importantly that it will get better – a door will open for you and the light will come in. You are not alone.

With heartfelt love and hope —
Your concerned friend, Sarah
